Our Nations Capital City of Recreation
Washington DC
Washington DC
is the nation's capital city. The home of the White House and the
center of our government, one may think this city would be filled
with boring buildings, sleepy lectures and filibusters full of legal
and governmental jargon. But, Washington DC is a city of monuments,
fine art and a chance to see life from a little different
perspective.
One of the most intriguing sites in Washington DC is the Mall. All of the fashion hip tourists can take a breath and relax. This mall has nothing to do with shopping. The National Park Service has taken care of some of the oldest lands and monuments in Washington DC for years. These monuments are grouped together into what is termed the National Mall. Surrounded by old growth trees and beautiful gardens and fountains, the National Mall is one of the most visited attractions in Washington DC.
While outdoor beauty is a wondrous site, the indoor fine arts can prove breathtaking. The Smithsonian Institute is comprised of 19 museums, 9 research centers and the National Zoo, all of which are located in Washington DC. The museums cover African American history, fine art, science, culture and design. No two days need to be spent in the same style of museum. In order to see all of the offerings by the Smithsonian with care, one would need to plan a mission for months to Washington DC.
If travel is something that is comfortable during your trip, here is an insider secret. Approximately 1 ½ hours drive from Washington DC is Harpers Ferry / Bolivar WV. This town was the home to a civil rights battle like none other. Home to the Niagara Movement more than 100 years ago, the town recently commemorated this movement with a huge celebration. With a history of abolitionists, Old Tyme Christmas and some of the most quaint shops, not to mention the amazing views of the Potomac River joining the Shenandoah River, this is the biggest secret of the Washington DC area.
When thinking of the nation's capital, boredom and a lack of fun are the first things to come to mind. But, contrary to that belief, Washington DC is the epicenter of a bubble of activity. From any spot in the city, a visitor can drive 1 to 2 hours and reach every style of vacation resort, beach front and 4 star restaurant they could ever want to see. The activities are aimed at all age groups, all diversities and all walks of life. In one day a visitor can walk the same path as some of the most famous Presidents of the United States and in the next see the struggles of the African American culture. A world of diversity, a world of education, a world of fun!
