Boston is the capital city of Massachusetts and also the largest city in the state. Boston has a metropolitan area that includes 4.5 million residents. Boston is also one of the oldest cities in the United States. With its history being so long, it is no wonder that people come to this city to partake in the traditions and customs of our great country.
Since
Puritan colonists from England founded Boston in 1630, many people
have considered Boston to be a very important city. Those who lived
during that time saw most of the country's major events happen right
in the heart of Boston. There was the Boston Tea Party, the Boston
Massacre, and many major events of the American Revolution. If you
are a history buff, Boston is the place for you. Besides all of the
great museums that explore Boston's rich history, there are also
other sights that you can find around the city with historical
significance if you keep your eyes open. More than 16 million
visitors come very single year to see these sights, so there is no
reason why you should miss out on it.
Since the American Revolution, Boston has been a major shipping port and center for manufacturing. This also made Boston become a place of many firsts. Boston set up the first public school called Boston Latin School in 1635, just after the settlers landed. There was also the first college, Harvard, which was located in nearby Cambridge, Massachusetts. Harvard is a great place to visit, even if you are not currently looking at colleges. The history and the pride of Harvard shows all over campus. And contrary to popular belief, the first subway system in the United States belongs to Boston, not New York City.
Boston currently has one of the highest costs of living in the country, but if you want to visit there for business or a vacation, you will still find comfortable and affordable accommodations and entertainment.
The city of Boston is one of those cities that has a real sense of cultural identify. Culture is a large part of the entertainment in Boston, mainly due to the high numbers of intellectuals from the universities located in and around Boston. If you want to mix your love of history with your love of theater, you will want to catch a show at the Cutler Majestic Theater, the Boston Opera House, or the Citi Performing Arts Center. All of these places play host to a variety of different cultural events including the ballet, the Boston Lyric Opera Company, and the famous Boston Pops Orchestra.
If you find yourself in Boston during the Christmas and New Year's seasons, you will be able to attend the First Night events in the city. If you are in the city in the summer time, you can join in on all the festivities of the Italian summer feats and the Fourth of July celebrations are some of the best in the country. You can also see the week long Harborfest activities during the Independence Day celebration.
Boston is a great place to hang out and have fun, even if you are not into seeing historical sights and walking around museums all day. Boston is one of the birthplaces of the hardcore punk genre. You can catch great punk bands playing locally throughout some of the city's hottest venues. Some local bands that made it big were the Mighty Mighty Bosstones and the Dropkick Murphys. You can also find great dance clubs downtown where you can dance, relax and throw back a few drinks with your new friends.
Boston is a great place for you, your family, and everyone that wants to find a cool place to visit for the summer or the winter. Although it will probably be snowing in the winter, some people find that spending some time in the winter in Boston is a great way to get in some good sledding and other winder outdoor activities, especially those who do not live in a colder climate such as Boston.
