Seattle is one of the best coastal port cities on the west coast. It is located in Washington state and lies on the Puget Sound. The city is only ninety-six miles from the Canadian border, so you will find all kinds of people living and playing in Seattle. It is the largest city in the Pacific Northwest, so if you want to visit Seattle, you may never want to go back home.
Seattle has
been settled for more that 4000 years - long before European settlers
even found this area. From then on, the population grew and grew
until now, where the population rests at 3.3 million people in the
metropolitan area. Seattle is known at the “Emerald City†because of
a contest held in the 1980s. It is in reference to the lush
evergreen trees that are found surrounding the city.
What most people associate Seattle with is coffee. While it is true that some of the best coffee in the country has originated from Seattle, there is more to this quiet city that just coffee. Seattle is also the birthplace of grunge music, the Boeing plant, and the literacy rate. In 2005 and 2006, a poll conducted by Central Connecticut State University, Seattle was ranked the most literate city in America and it came in second in 2007. It is also the most educated city in the country. Almost half of all residents over twenty-five hold bachelor’s degrees.
If you are visiting Seattle, you can go and see all of the great tourist sites: The Space Needle, Westlake Center, the Smith Tower, and of course the Starbucks Center. Many of these sites can be seen on your own or as part of a tour group. You can also come to Seattle during some of the city’s best known events. If you want to see Northwest Folklife, you will want to visit Seattle over the Memorial Day Weekend. July and August are the best times to catch Seafair events. There is also the Seattle International Film Festival for all the film buffs that travel to Seattle.
Labor Day weekend is also exciting with Bumbershoot programs. And you cannot go without attending the Hempfest at least once in your life. The Hempfest draws more than 100,000 people annually. Other cultural events that take place in Seattle are Native American powwows, Greek festivals, and other ethnic festivals that are held throughout the year.
When you need a relaxing night in Seattle, there are plenty of places where you can go play. So if you want to get off the beaten path to take your travel companion on a date or to search for new dates, there are some hidden places in Seattle that will turn a great night into a romantic night.
The Golden Gardens Park is a perfect place to take your sweetheart in Seattle. Come when the sun is setting and watch one of the most beautiful sunsets on the west coast. After you watch the sunset, you should go to Wild Ginger for a private, romantic time. You will want to sit upstairs—this is where you can relax in a cozy, candlelit lounge. After you have had dinner, take your date to Thaiku. This is a dark wood bar that exudes sex and is perfect for any couple that wants to stay close while enjoying some of the bar’s finest concoctions.
If you need to relax from a great date, you will want to take a spa day. There are more than half a dozen spas in the Seattle area that will cater to your every need. Seattle is a gem on the west coast. And don’t listen to all those people that say it rains all the time. Although there is a lot of rain per year, it is nothing to stop visitors and locals alike from attending some of the best events, eating the best food, and relaxing with a hot cup of joe.
