Inside Guide to Travel in Dallas, Texas

Dallas, Texas is a great place to visit for fun, adventure, and great warmth from the people that live there. Dallas is the third largest city in the state and the ninth largest in the country. The city alone is home to more than 1 million people, while the metropolitan area (including Fort Worth) is home to 6.1 million people. Dallas is also the largest inland city that has no link to the sea.  

Dallas is one of the western states that was founded in the mid 1800s (1841) and used as a base for the petroleum industry. This was and still is the main economic resource for the city. Other parts of the economy include banking, transportation, telecommunications, and computer technology. Dallas' long history is wrapped up in the oil industry, from the beginning until today. Cotton was also a main industry in Dallas when it was first settled.


If you want to have a good time in Dallas, you will want to enjoy the food. If you love barbecue, then you will love to eat in Dallas. The city is world renowned for barbecue, Tex-Mex, and Mexican cuisine. If you want the best frozen margarita in town, you will have to visit La Calle Doce. Some other restaurants you cannot leave Dallas without visiting are the Mansion on Turtle Creek, Bone Daddy's Barbecue, and Mi Cocina. Dallas is a town where most people take the time to eat out at least a few times a week. On average, the locals in Dallas will eat out at restaurants four times a week. This is the third highest rate in the country, behind other Texas cities Houston and Austin. Dallas boasts more restaurants than even in New York City, so there is no shortage of fine dining and great food on your trip to the city.  

Taking in some great entertainment is a another must if you are planning to visit Dallas. There is an Arts District right in downtown Dallas that will cater to nearly every kind of art lover. You will be able to see the Dallas Museum of Art, the Morton H. Meyerson Symphony Center, and the Nasher Sculpture Center. There are a few projects also in the works that will expand the art district with a new opera house and an addition to the performing arts high school located in the arts district.  

Looking for some cool jazz? You can find some great jazz hot spots in Dallas. There is the Deep Ellum area, which was popular in the 1920 and 1930s. It showcased such artists in their clubs as Robert Johnson and Bessie Smith. Today, the area is full of artists who live and work in lofts with studios and work right alongside some of the best bars and pubs in the city. You can also see around here much of the graffiti murals that are found throughout the city. There is a lax stance on graffiti in the city, but Dallas has some of the most artistic graffiti murals that it does not look like graffiti. It is considered art.  

What keeps Dallas in the center of the arts scene is the City of Dallas Office of Cultural Affairs. The organization runs six different cultural centers that are located throughout the city in order to fund artists for theaters, art projects, and the city's own radio station. 

Dallas is a town where you can discover everything - from art to food you will be able to find something that interests you. Few people know that Dallas is such a cultural center. This is one of the great hidden treasures that the city has to offer its locals as well as those traveling through. Dallas is also a great place to discover the true meaning of the southwest. You will not be able to get enough of their famous Tex-Mex cuisine, and it will keep you coming back to the city again and again to experience this great mix of food, art, and fun.
